St. James’ Sunday Bible Study Lectures

April 14 @ 12:15 pm - 1:30 pm

The Key to the Meaning of History

Lecture 16
Sunday April 14 2019 12:15pm. to 1:30pm.

In the past few lectures, we’ve encountered some ancient approaches to the interpretation of Revelation that may seem peculiar to modern readers. Yet when we reflect on the questions those ancient writers sought to answer, we often find that we are asking similar questions. In this lecture, we’ll consider the interpretations of ancient writers who sought to explore the meaning of history and their own place within it. As modern readers, we, too, want a sense of where things have been and where they are going so that we can navigate our way through life. The ancient writers that we will consider were trying to make sense of history from a theological point of view, to interpret the flow of events in light of the purposes of God. To gain a deeper understanding of this approach, we will look at some of these writers at three moments in time, ranging from late antiquity to the High Middle Ages.
