St. James’ Sunday Bible Study Lectures
March 17 @ 12:15 pm - 1:30 pm
New Creation and New Jerusalem
Sunday March 17 2019 12:15pm. to 1:30pm.
In the final scene of Revelation, we see John’s visions of a new heaven and a new earth and of New Jerusalem, the city of God, descending from heaven in splendour. A voice announces that God has come to dwell with people. Death is gone, and the age of sorrow is over. The scene is an explosion of light and colour, but depictions of it in popular culture are often more entertaining than compelling. In this lecture, we’ll focus not on the details of the New Jerusalem passage, such as the pearly gates or the streets paved with gold, but on the larger cosmic, social, political, and sacred dimensions of the scene. We will close this section of the course by asking what kind of invitation this climactic scene offers to readers.
