St. James’ Sunday Bible Study Lectures
March 3 @ 12:15 pm - 1:30 pm
The Harlot and the Imperial Economy
Sunday March 3 2019 12:15pm. to 1:30pm.
In the last lecture, we looked in detail at the beasts from the sea and the land, two images that exemplified the destructive evil present in the political and religious practices of John’s society. In this lecture, we turn to Babylon, the prostitute who characterizes a city. As we focus on this image, we’ll ask how John describes this figure and why there has been so much debate about what she symbolizes. From a literary perspective, we will also examine John’s use of two forms of writing that are familiar to modern readers: satire, such as we might see in modern political cartoons, and the obituary.
